A man in France has been fined $200 for using the speakerphone on his cell while in a train station.
The man, who has only been identified as “David,” told an interviewer from CNN affiliate BFMTV that the incident occurred while he was waiting for a train at Nantes station in the west of the country on Sunday.
He told the outlet that he was talking to his sister with his phone on speaker when an official from France’s state-owned rail company, SNCF, intervened.
“An SNCF security person told me that if I didn’t turn off my loudspeaker, I was going to be fined €150,” he told BFMTV.
The man said he initially thought it was a joke.
“I think the person was offended. She took out her notebook and fined me,” he added.
In the event, the fine turned out to be even higher – €200 ($207) – because he did not pay it on the spot.
The passenger told BFMTV that he has hired a lawyer as he plans to contest the fine.

L’uomo, che è stato identificato solo come “David”, ha raccontato a un intervistatore dell’affiliata della CNN BFMTV che l’incidente è avvenuto domenica mentre aspettava un treno alla stazione di Nantes, nella parte occidentale del Paese.
Ha raccontato che stava parlando con la sorella con il telefono in vivavoce quando è intervenuto un funzionario della società ferroviaria statale francese, la SNCF.
“Un addetto alla sicurezza della SNCF mi ha detto che se non avessi spento l’altoparlante sarei stato multato di 150 euro”, ha dichiarato a BFMTV.
L’uomo ha detto di aver inizialmente pensato a uno scherzo.
“Credo che la persona si sia offesa. Ha tirato fuori il suo taccuino e mi ha multato”, ha aggiunto.
In realtà, la multa si è rivelata ancora più alta – 200 euro (207 dollari) – perché non l’ha pagata sul posto.
Il passeggero ha dichiarato a BFMTV di aver assunto un avvocato per contestare la multa.
