English Conversation Practice with a Native American Teacher

Marcus Wells, native American English teacher for conversation practice

Spanish – Italian – French – German

Hear Me Out

When people think about practicing English conversation, almost everyone pictures a classroom or a video call. My way of working is a little different, and before you decide anything, I’d like to explain why.

Read this page. Then try a 30-minute conversation with me that is completely free. What’s the worst that can happen? You’ll have practiced half an hour of spoken English with a native speaker, and you’ll have a much clearer idea of what works for you.

English conversation with me is a one-on-one, 30-minute session with a native American teacher. You talk about real things, I correct you as you speak, and with every session you loosen up a little more. It costs €15 per session, you can book any day of the week, weekends included, and the first 30-minute trial is free.

Sessions take place over a WhatsApp audio call. All you need is an internet connection: not a cent in long-distance phone charges, wherever you are in the world.

I’m Marcus Wells, an American teacher from Philadelphia with a TEFL certification. I’ve been teaching for more than 15 years, I’ve worked with more than 4,000 students, and I’ve lived in Italy for more than 17 years. Below, I share what that experience has taught me, including one thing that changed my mind.

Conversation Is How You Improve

You don’t need another course. If you read work emails, understand movies and pass grammar tests but freeze when you have to speak, the problem usually isn’t vocabulary. What’s missing is regular speaking practice with someone who corrects you without judging you. That’s exactly what my sessions are: you talk, I listen, I correct you on the spot, and we keep going.

A Real Conversation, Not Just Work English

Even people who speak well usually use English for work: meetings, emails, presentations. Almost nobody gets the chance anymore to chat at length about anything and everything, just because it’s interesting, the way we did when we were young.

These days we ask each other how the weekend was, how work is going, how the family is. We rarely talk about new ideas that aren’t political. That’s exactly what my digital workbook focuses on. Talking about what makes you curious trains your English better than rehearsing a meeting.

What Do We Talk About?

Whatever you like: your life, your work, your projects, a trip, something that happened yesterday. If you’d rather start from a prompt, I publish five new articles every week in my digital workbook, roughly one per working day, so there’s always a fresh topic to discuss.

Why We Use WhatsApp (From My Experience)

I know what you might be thinking: “I’d rather do a video call, or meet in person.” Plenty of people tell me that, and I understand. Some students who had insisted on video calls or in-person lessons now only want the audio call, because it has become so convenient and easy. After more than 4,000 students, experience changed my mind too.

You already have enough video calls. Almost everyone has plenty of them for work. An audio call lets you use time that would otherwise be lost, like your commute (hands-free only, and only where it’s safe and allowed), the bus, the train or a walk, to do something useful and different.

Consistency and flexibility go together. The people who reach their goals are the ones who show up week after week. A call doesn’t need a desk, a webcam, a tidy background or good lighting, so it fits first thing in the morning, on your lunch break or late at night.

It helps the teacher too. I need flexibility and consistency as well. With traditional schedules, one of us is free and the other isn’t. With a call, we have a better chance of finding a time that works for both.

It’s a focused way to speak. With no screen, you rely on the language alone, like on a real call with a client, a supplier or a hotel. No notifications, no frozen pictures, and you can walk around or sit with your eyes closed.

I tested it. One of my regular corporate clients was convinced he would understand better in person. I went to his office and asked him exactly the same questions I had asked over an audio call. He didn’t understand any more. It’s a test, not a scientific study, but it matches what I see with my students.

Video has its place. If we need to edit a presentation together, go over a workbook exercise or rehearse body language for a job interview, we switch to a video call for that session.

Who It’s For

  • People who already speak very well (C1) and think they’ve hit their limit. With advanced learners, I work on bringing out the blind spots they didn’t know they had, with deeper and more interesting topics.
  • People stuck at an intermediate level (B1/B2). Speaking often, with targeted correction and plenty of spoken practice, helps you break through the plateau.
  • People who used to speak well and are now “rusty.” Years without practice have shrunk your English to a basic level and made you doubt yourself. A few conversations close together reawaken much of what you already know.
  • People who studied English for years and still freeze up when speaking. You read, understand and write, but the sentence won’t come out when it counts. That’s fixed with regular speaking practice and immediate correction.
  • Professionals with international calls and meetings who want to feel confident.
  • People with a basic foundation (A2 or above) who want to start really speaking. Sessions are 100% in English: you don’t need a high level, but you do need to be able to follow a simple conversation.

Not for: children, school tutoring or catch-up, or absolute beginners. From the teenage years up, if you already speak some English, you’re motivated and you want to improve.

What We Work On

We don’t memorize grammar tables. Every conversation builds:

  • Spontaneous speaking: answering on the spot without agonizing over perfect grammar.
  • American intonation: natural rhythm, idiomatic expressions and everyday phrases.
  • Active vocabulary: turning the words you understand into words you actually use.
  • Professional English: meetings, work calls, networking and job interviews.

Pricing and Terms

  • Free trial: 30 minutes, no commitment.
  • €15 per 30-minute session after the trial.
  • Calls over WhatsApp: no international call charges; you only use your internet connection.
  • Payment after the trial, by bank transfer, PayPal or a secure card payment link.
  • Discounts available once we decide to continue together.
  • Cancellation: you can reschedule or cancel with at least 24 hours’ notice.
  • Companies and teams: invoices and packages on request.

Hours

I teach seven days a week. My usual time slots, Central European Time (CET), are 5:00–8:00 a.m., 5:00–7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.–midnight. On weekends we decide the times together, based on what works for both of us. If you need different times, just ask: we’ll find a solution.

If you’re in the Americas, my afternoon and evening slots fall between your morning and your afternoon. If you’re in Asia, my early-morning slots land in your late morning or afternoon. Tell me where you are and we’ll work out the times together.

How to Book

  1. Message me on WhatsApp with your level, your goals, your country or time zone and the times that suit you.
  2. We find a time. If there’s room, we can even do the trial the same day.
  3. After the trial, you decide. No pressure, no commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the trial really free?

Yes. It lasts 30 minutes, you pay nothing and you have no obligation. You only pay if you decide to continue.

Do I have to pay for international calls?

No. Sessions are WhatsApp audio calls, so there are no long-distance charges: you only use your internet connection.

Do I need WhatsApp? Are there extra costs?

Yes, we hold the sessions over WhatsApp. There are no extra costs: no call rates, just your internet connection.

Can I do the sessions from any country?

Yes. As long as you have WhatsApp and an internet connection, you can join from wherever you are. We agree on times that fit your time zone.

Is it audio only?

The usual sessions are audio calls, and we switch to video when it’s useful. Try it first: you may be surprised.

Is 30 minutes enough?

Yes. An audio-only conversation takes concentration, and 30 minutes is easy to fit in and easy to repeat. Frequency matters more than the length of each session, so I recommend two or three sessions a week if you can.

Can I start from zero?

Sessions are 100% in English, so you need a foundation to follow a simple conversation (A2 or above). If you’re starting from zero, it’s best to build the basics first with another method and come talk to me once you can follow a simple chat.

What do we talk about?

Whatever you like: your work, your projects, your opinions, or a topic from the five weekly articles in the digital workbook.

Will I learn American English?

You hear and practice the intonation and natural expressions of American English. Being able to follow any accent is a good goal, and we can work on that too.

What are your hours, and in which time zone?

I teach every day. My usual slots, in Italy time, are 5:00–8:00 a.m., 5:00–7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.–midnight. We’ll convert them to your time zone together.

How do I pay?

After the free trial, if you decide to continue: bank transfer, PayPal or a secure card payment link.

What happens if I need to cancel?

You can cancel or reschedule the session with at least 24 hours’ notice, and we’ll find another time.

Can you help with work English and job interviews?

Yes. Bring your meetings, your calls and your interview questions, and we’ll rehearse them together.

Ready to Start Talking?

The first 30-minute conversation is free and commits you to nothing. Message me, we’ll find a time, and you’ll hear how your English sounds when nobody is judging you.
