The world’s most livable city for 2026 has been revealed

Copenhagen has been named the world’s most liveable city for 2026 in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Global Liveability Index, retaining the top position thanks to perfect scores for stability, infrastructure and education. Vienna ranked second, followed by Melbourne, Geneva and Sydney, while Osaka, Auckland, Adelaide and Vancouver completed the top 10. The index evaluated 173 cities worldwide across five key categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Western Europe remained the strongest-performing region overall, although its average score slipped slightly due to growing geopolitical and security concerns, while several Chinese cities climbed the rankings following improvements in healthcare. Among the biggest movers, New York rose to 66th place after improvements in public safety, and London, Manchester and Edinburgh also recovered following declines in the previous year. At the opposite end of the rankings, conflict-affected cities continued to rank as the least liveable, with Damascus remaining at the bottom of the global list. The countries represented in the top 10 cities are Denmark, Austria, Australia, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand and Canada.
