Imparare l’Inglese con le Notizie: Parents are turning one of the best things for kids’ mental health into one of the worst

The pressure surrounding children’s sports is becoming a serious problem, with parents increasingly turning what should be a fun and healthy part of childhood into a high-stakes competition. Instead of simply encouraging kids to play, develop skills and enjoy being part of a team, some parents are pushing children toward year-round training, expensive travel teams, private coaching and early specialization in a single sport, often with the hope that their child will eventually earn a college scholarship or even become a professional athlete. Experts warn that this pressure can lead to burnout, anxiety, injuries and children eventually quitting sports altogether, particularly when they feel that their performance is more important to their parents than their enjoyment. The growing youth-sports industry also plays a role, with families spending huge amounts of money on equipment, tournaments, coaching and travel, creating an environment where parents can feel that they have to keep investing or risk their child falling behind. Specialists argue that children generally benefit from playing different sports, taking breaks and having enough freedom to decide what they actually enjoy, rather than being treated like miniature professional athletes from an early age. The bigger message is that parents may think they are helping their children succeed, but excessive involvement and pressure can actually take away the very thing that makes sports valuable in the first place: the chance to have fun, make friends, build confidence and simply be a kid.

Question: Did you or anyone you know get pressured by parents or other people in your life regarding sports or other activities?
