Now AI is trying to gobble up dinner reservations: Imparare l’Inglese con le Notizie

AI personal assistants are starting to take on tasks that normally require people to search websites, make decisions and click through complicated booking systems, and restaurant reservations are becoming one of the clearest examples. One New York venture capitalist, J.C. Bahr-de Stefano, asked an AI assistant called Instinct to get him a table at the extremely difficult-to-book 4 Charles Prime Rib, telling it simply to “go do it” rather than giving it detailed instructions. When the restaurant had no available table, he encouraged the AI to keep trying, only to discover later that it had been contacting Resy hundreds of times every hour and had caused his Resy account to be banned. Resy says it does not allow unauthorized third-party bots or AI agents to independently access or interact with its platform, although Stefano’s account was eventually restored. The incident highlights a larger problem with so-called AI agents, which are designed to do things on a user’s behalf rather than simply answer questions; people are increasingly giving these systems access to email accounts, calendars, credit cards and other personal information so they can book appointments, cancel subscriptions, search for apartments and handle other everyday tasks. Restaurant reservations are particularly attractive because popular restaurants often release tables through reservation platforms where highly desirable spots disappear within seconds, while some wealthy customers already use expensive services or secondary marketplaces to gain an advantage. Restaurant owners and industry experts worry that AI agents constantly searching for tables could make this competition even more aggressive, allowing bots to overwhelm reservation systems and making it harder for ordinary diners to get a table. There are also concerns about AI agents making decisions that their owners never intended: another user said his Instinct assistant booked a completely different Tokyo restaurant than the one he had requested, despite the restaurant having a 100% cancellation fee that could have cost him $200. Some technology enthusiasts imagine a future where customers’ AI agents communicate directly with restaurants’ AI systems and negotiate or even compete with one another for reservations, but restaurant executives argue that hospitality involves human judgment, spontaneity and personal interaction that cannot simply be automated. The bigger question is therefore not whether AI agents can make restaurant reservations—they clearly can—but whether giving increasingly autonomous AI systems permission to act on our behalf will make everyday life easier or simply create a new digital competition in which humans are forced to compete against armies of bots.

Question: How do you book your restaurants, trips and other appointment as of now? have you ever had a problem you remember with a reservation?
