Being able to get down onto the floor and stand up again is an important measure of physical fitness, according to a CNN report by mobility coach Dana Santas. These everyday movements require several abilities to work together, including muscle strength, joint mobility, balance and coordination. Although people often concentrate on walking or lifting weights, maintaining these basic skills can be equally important for staying independent as they grow older.

A 2025 study involving more than 4,000 adults aged 46 to 75 found a connection between the ability to sit on the floor and rise again without support and the risk of dying. Participants received scores based on their balance and how much assistance they needed. Those with the lowest scores had nearly four times the risk of death from natural causes and approximately six times the risk of cardiovascular death compared with those achieving perfect scores.

The article explains that standing up from a chair is another useful way to evaluate functional fitness. It requires lower-body strength, core stability and sufficient flexibility in the hips and ankles. Medical professionals regularly use chair-standing exercises to identify mobility limitations and assess potential fall risks.

Santas recommends three exercises to improve these abilities: repeatedly standing up and sitting down from a chair, practicing a supported sequence of movements between kneeling and standing, and gradually learning to rise from the floor without using the hands. Beginners should use a sturdy chair for support and increase the difficulty gradually. Anyone with health or mobility concerns should consult a medical professional before starting.

The main message is that maintaining physical independence requires training for everyday activities, not simply exercising at the gym. Practicing these movements regularly can help people preserve their strength, balance and mobility throughout life

Question: Have you ever started exercising or changed your lifestyle because something happened that made you realize you weren’t as fit or healthy as you thought? What happened, and did you manage to stick with the changes?
